Nike Golf's Tiger Woods captures 2009 Buick Open
-Tiger's victory brings number of Nike Golf wins globally in 2009 to 10
TORONTO (August 3, 2009)--In his first tournament since the Open Championship, Tiger Woods came roaring back for his fourth win of the season at the Buick Open.
Woods closed with a bogey-free 69 for a 20-under total for the 69th PGA Tour victory of his career, moving him to third spot for all-time PGA Tour wins.
Nike Golf athletes have won 10 events globally in 2009, eight on the PGA Tour and two by Paul Casey on the European Tour.
After a slow start at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club--he posted a 1-under 71 and was T95 on Thursday, representing his worst position after the opening round of any tournament he eventually won--Woods shot 18-under combined for rounds two and three to take the lead heading into Sunday.
With his Nike Forged Blades, ONE Tour ball and Victory Red 56-degree and SV 60-degree wedges, Woods knocked down the flags to finish T6 in greens in regulation.
Woods won in style on Sunday, wearing Nike Golf's Stripe Argyle Polo shirt in Atom Red, and threw his Nike ONE Tour ball into the crowd on 18 as a thank-you. He also played a SUMO DYMO Prototype driver and Nike SQ2 15-degree and 19-degree fairway woods.
With the win, Woods also grabbed the No. 1 spot in the FedExCup standings. This was the third time that Woods has won the Buick; he also won in 2002 and 2006.
With rounds of 71-63-65-69 this week, Tiger Woods has now recorded all 36 rounds at Warwick Hills with par-or-better scores. He opened his career at the Buick Open with an even-par 72, and has since reeled off 35 under-par rounds.
The victory gives him momentum going into next week's World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, which he has won six times, which is followed directly by the PGA Championship.
Fellow Nike Golf athlete Justin Leonard closed with a five-under 67 to finish T14, his second Top 15 in as many weeks.
