tiger launches new sumo drivers to spellbound audience

With the North American golf media gathered expressly for event, Tiger Woods helped launch the new SQ SUMO² 5900 and SQ SUMO 5000 drivers by getting straight to the key point for amateur golfers.

On a sun-splashed morning in central Florida on Dec. 3, the World’s No. 1 ranked player was asked about the key benefits offered by the second generation of the SUMO drivers, especially the square SQ SUMO² 5900.

Well, you hit it longer and straighter,” said Tiger, dressed in black and sporting a goatee. “That's the greatest combo you could possibly have.”

Ironically, Tiger said he doesn’t play the SQ SUMO² 5900 because—wait for it—the ball goes too straight. For the distance he hits the ball, Tiger said he needs to curve the ball to fit into doglegs.

The SQ SUMO² hits the ball “just go too straight, which is great for all the amateurs out there. You hit it straighter, and I hit it a little bit farther.”

Tiger said that at 80 per cent effort with his SasQuatch Tour driver, he comfortably carries the ball 290 yards daily. He said the new SQ SUMO² 5900 driver gives him six to eight more yards in the air.

Under a marquee on the range of the Learning Center at the PGA Club in P or t St. Lucie, Tiger noted during a Q&A session that he was very proud of the evolution of the original square SQ SUMO² that featured a Moment of Inertia of 5900—the highest MOI allowable by the USGA—and a softer look and better sound.

He showcased the drivers during a clinic on the range, hitting mammoth shots with the SQ SUMO² 5900. With the SUMO 5000, he w or ked the ball at will, changing traject or ies and shaping his ball flight like an artist.

Asked his favourite stat of 2007, Tiger said, “Seven wins.”

He will return to the PGA Tour in 2008 with 61 career titles (21 behind Sam Snead's career record of 82) and 13 major championships (five back of Jack Nicklaus' all-time mark).

The SQ SUMO² 5900 and SQ SUMO 5000 will both be available for purchase in stores on SUMO Saturday, February 2, 2008.
