SUMO˛ 5900
Makes a Believer of Stephen Ames
When
Stephen Ames first started experimenting with the SQ SUMO˛ 5900 driver, he
said the square shape would take some getting used to.
“Once I got on the launch monitor and saw the test results, I got over that
pretty quickly,” the Calgary resident says.
“I gained 10 to 12 yards in the air with a higher launch. Combined with a
lower spin rate, I was getting 20 to 25 more yards overall than my old
driver. That’s huge. It instantly went into the bag.
“In the Sony this year and at [the] Mercedes [Championships], there were
par-5s I’ve never sniffed before [in two shots], but with the 5900 I got
there in two.
“My caddie and I were looking at old yardage books from Hawaii. Where we
were once hitting an 8-iron for the approach, we were now hitting sand
wedge.
“I don’t think it’s about looks anymore. I think the square geometry is a
benchmark moment in design for metal drivers. It makes the game easier to
play and I can move it around, which I couldn’t do with my last driver.
“Even on miss-hits I’m not losing much distance. I’m very happy with the
5900.”
